Flanges – Sandco Metal Industries

Flanges and its types

A pipe flanges a disc, collar or ring that attaches to pipe with the purpose of providing increased support for strength, blocking off a pipeline or implementing the attachment of more items. They are usually welded or screwed to the pipe end and are connected with bolts. A gasket is inserted between the two connecting flanges to provide a reliable and tight seal. These flanges are either custom with dimensions provided by the customer or they are manufactured according to published specifications. Several organizations and associations have published specifications that provide dimensional information as well as pressure specifications at different temperatures.

Types of flanges

Blind Flange- A Blind flange is round plate which has all of the relevant bolt holes but no centre hole. This flange is used to close off the ends of a piping systems and pressure vessel openings. This feature of Blind flange permits easy access to vessels or Piping systems for inspection purposes.

Weld neck pipe- these flanges are installed by welding the pipe to the neck of the flange. The stress from the flange is transferred to the pipe itself using weld neck pipes. This also reduces high stress concentration at the base of the hub. Weld Neck Flanges have a long hub and are often used for high pressure applications. These flanges are designed to be joined to a Piping system by Bun Welding. The Neck, or Hub, transmits stresses to the Pipe, reducing stress concentrations at the base of the Flange

Slip on flange- slip on flange slides over the pipe. They are made with inside diameter slightly higher than the outside diameter of the pipe. This property of them allows the flange to slide over the pipe. Slip-ons are secured to the pipe with a fillet weld at the top and the bottom of the flange.

Lapped Joint Flange- A pipe is typically welded to the Stub End and the Lap Joint is free to rotate around the stub end. A pipe is typically welded to the Stub End and the Lap Joint pipe flange is free to rotate around the stub end. Lap Joint pipe flanges are often used for applications that require frequent dismantling. Threaded pipe flanges are often used for small diameter, high pressure requirements.
