Butt Weld Fittings – Sandco Metal Industries

Ever heard of butt weld fitting before?

Well, in today's world, we are all connected to each other via telephones, mobiles or social media. To make this connection happen, we need to have connectors. Butt weld fitting works in a similar fashion. It connects two or more parts that are almost impossible to join practically. This type of fitting avoids any additional circuitry and are very much reliable, the best part being your pockets need no be bothered much!

A butt welding joint is made by slowly heating up the two weld ends with a weld plate and then combining them under a specific pressure. This process is suitable for prefabrication and producing special fittings. Then, the material is usually ground down to a smooth finish and either sent on its way to the processing machine, or sold as a completed product.

A piping system using butt weld fittings is advantageous due to following reasons:

It is permanently leakproof if a fitting is welded to the pipe.

The continuous metal structure formed between pipe and fitting strengthens the system.

Smooth inner surface and gradual directional changes reduce pressure losses and turbulence and the action of corrosion and erosion is minimized.

Space utilization is minimum for a welded system.

Material and Performance

Choice of material or grade or schedule is not made by distributors or by fitting manufacturers, but by engineers who design pipelines or systems based on performance requirements and acceptable costs. Engineers take into account key operating conditions and environment: pressure, temperature, abrasion, corrosion, vibrations. Fitting materials also have to be chemically compatible with pipe materials to which they are connected to avoid inter-metal corrosion, and for weld ability. Finally, cost of various materials varies greatly.

The most common materials used in fittings are carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, copper, glass, rubber, etc. In addition to that, fittings, for specific purposes, sometimes equipped with layers of materials of a completely different quality. The material of a fitting is basically set during the choice of the pipe, in most cases; a fitting is of the same material as that of the pipe.
